History of the Craftsbury Municipal Gravel Pit
For many years, the Craftsbury municipal gravel pit has been part of the working landscape of northern Vermont. Located on property owned by Kurtis Mellett and Margot Mellett who lease this land to the Town of Craftsbury. The gravel pit supplied locally sourced materials used in the maintenance of town roads and a variety of public infrastructure projects throughout the community.
The availability of local sand and gravel has long played an important role in rural Vermont. Access to nearby materials helps communities maintain roads, improve drainage, and support public works without relying entirely on resources transported from greater distances. Like many municipal gravel operations throughout the state, the Craftsbury gravel pit became part of the practical infrastructure that supports everyday life in a rural community.
Since 2008, the gravel pit has supplied materials used for local projects and road maintenance, becoming a familiar part of the area's working landscape. During that time, the site contributed to the infrastructure that residents, businesses, visitors, and emergency services rely upon throughout the year.
The history of the property reflects a broader Vermont tradition of local resources serving local needs. For nearly two decades, the Craftsbury municipal gravel pit has been one chapter in the long history of the land and its connection to the community.
Today, the gravel pit remains part of the history of the property, the story of Craftsbury, and the working landscape that continues to define much of northern Vermont.
